Innovative wave floor support structure cut for timber on CNC machine with massive reduction in construction costs

Standardised hall programme

As part of the design package for cost-reduction in the standardised meeting hall construction, we invented a development of the proven OSB spline and joist system. It eliminates the “wet” trade of screeding the foot slopes between bench rows, and the transition to the flat aisles.

A 3D schematic model was created and prototyped by the joinery manufacturer using CNC machining to cut slots for the joists and profile the top which then supports the floor deck.

Working with input from other consultants from the design team, cut-outs were included for services and return air flow for HVAC etc.

The Process

SB Joinery designed CNC cut transition pieces from ply which folded and fixed on site to provide an all-timber end of foot slope to aisle slope, with a joint suitable for the carpet.

Identification part numbers were router cut into each flat component and colour coded joist ends, to simply installation

Fairbank’s design worked an absolute treat, and saved circa 10K in costs and knocked 4 weeks off the standard build time
